art pen pals

A couple of months ago my friend Angie emailed me and told me about this art pen pal idea for kids that was being set up by Jean at The Artful Parent. I hadn't been by Jean's website in a while so I'm glad Angie emailed me or I would have missed this opportunity. Jean collected names and then emailed everyone with the name and address of another child that is close in age.

I put off having the kids create their first art piece for their art pen pals for a while. I figured it would be easier to do once Christmas was over. Shortly after the New Year Micah received his first art piece from his pen pal. A little girl in Canada had used watercolors and pen to make him a mixed media piece of art. I love it! I'll have to photograph it and share it with you.

So, I decided it was about time to get the kids painting or something and when I tried to explain to Naomi what she was painting for she didn't really get it. But she didn't seem to mind because she loves to paint! Below is what they made for their art pen pals. I hope the girls that received those paintings like them. I actually decided to keep Micah's first painting for myself because I liked it so much, so I made him do another one...

This is Naomi's painting for her art pen pal. Acrylic on 5x7 canvas board.
She also made a card with foam stickers for her pen pal. Simple and sweet. Micah did a good job and didn't try to eat the paint this time. Here's the second painting he did that we sent to his pen pal in Canada.
He also made a card with foam stickers. He's going for the layered look apparently.
Thanks Jean for organizing this. I can't wait to see what will come in the mail next! And I can't wait to have the kids make some fun Valentine's for their art pen pals! Oh and Thanks Angie too for asking me to get involved! (too bad it wasn't our kids being pen pals, but I suppose they could still send each other stuff...hmm...)
